The photos of this 15-pieced work belong to my school, where I completed the first 15 years of my education, in Zappeion Greek High School of Istanbul. The photos of the rooms were taken on the floors -sections of the building- which the educators didn’t want us to leave, because they deemed dangerous, and were abandoned or converted to store rooms. These completely unplanned photographs were “a banned youth adventure” when they taken, then trasformed into a “quest to connect with the past” when I met the 145 years old history of the school. This project is a thank you, an apology, gratitude, catharsis and the connection I feel between us. All I could do for, to connect the old owners to the places they belong.
“Bağ-” is a search for a connection between the past and the present. An effort to transform a personal memory into a collective memory and to create a new archive of past connected to the present…The word “connection” refers to the name, the purpose and technique of the project synchronously. So that it is what is underlined with portraits connected to “the present spaces of the past”.
